Videographer vs Video Production Company

So videographer vs video production company – what’s the difference and what is a better fit for you?

Previously before starting Lift Video Production I was a freelance videographer so here’s my honest thoughts on both.

Videographers are usually great all round filmmakers who are very technically minded and are generally more affordable than a production company.

They’re experts in all the equipment you would need, and usually have experience in everything including weddings, music videos, real estate videos and corporate videos. Basically they shoot just about anything!

However sometimes, and I’ve been guilty of this when I was starting out, they can focus too much on the gear and equipment, and not enough on the content & story.

Which might be totally fine if you know exactly what you want.

Finally, because they’re just one person, they can have limited capacity which may just mean you need to get in early.

Video production companies on the other hand have more capacity and often have a network of freelance videographers they can use in various locations. They can help with ideas, strategy, scriptwriting and understand that you’re less interested in the gear and equipment, and just want to know how video can help you.

Video production companies are more likely to stick to one area or industry, like corporate video for example, and really become experts in that space.
