Writing the perfect c-suite video script
Need a script for a big wig? Prepare to be challenged!
C-suite scripts need to hit the right tone, deliver key messages and keep the audience engaged.
So, if you’re stuck writing a script for your CEO, CFO, CIO, CMO, CPO (and so on)...
Then download this template [LM1] and read these tips. It’s your guide to writing a cracking script that reads smoothly and lands with your audience.
Start with key messages
Lock down your key messages before you even think about the script – they form the foundation. Stick to three key messages and share them with stakeholders upfront. It’ll save you time and make sure everyone’s aligned on the video’s purpose.
Example key message for an induction video:
Key message 1: Trucks R Us is committed to a workplace where everyone is valued, respected and can thrive.
Key message 2: Every Trucks R Us team member has a role in the Chain of Responsibility.
Define your audience
Do some basic research into your audience and consider how they’ll to engage with the video.
Questions to ask:
Desk-based, onsite or on the road?
High school or university educated?
Is English a second language?
These simple questions will help you determine the length and level of detail, tailor the language, and decide on overlay and subtitles (hint: subtitles are always a good idea).
Keep it simple, stupid
Do your presenter a favour by keeping sentences short and avoiding tricky words or jargon.
Example rewrite of an intro to an induction video:
Before: “Today, we will delve into the core principles of our culture and define the strategic methodologies underpinning the guiding behaviours and actions that drive Trucks R Us.”
After: “Today we’re going to talk about our culture and the way we work at Trucks R Us.”
Read it aloud, twice
Most c-suite executives read from a teleprompter, but it’s not as easy as newsreaders make it look. In fact, it’s bloody hard!
A teleprompter script works best when it matches your natural speech and vocabulary.
Take time to review and read the script aloud, twice. And ask your executives to do the same. Many skip this step, but it makes all the difference.
